Hint: Working remote doesn't mean your job will be easier

I’ve been working 8 hours a day for a Tech news company, and I’m super grateful for the opportunity and the income.

However, I’ll admit — it does take some getting used to. I’m still finding my beat and my rhythm. It’s a lot of work.

I’m new to it all. And I’ve had to wrestle and overcome imposter syndrome as I work closely with long term and seasoned experts within the industry.

This is the reason why I’ve been away from Medium for over a month now. I hope to find more balance in my life and still write on here because I miss my Medium community.

The lessons I’ve learned so far working an 8 hour a day remote job…..

Remote jobs are convenient

The major convenience here is obvious. You don't have to commute to an office and you can work from anywhere you want.

For now, since I’m still in a similar time zone as my shift, I work from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

For 8 hours each day, I spend my time glued to my laptop screen, researching and writing. It’s A lot of WORK!

I don’t take as many breaks during the day because I’m working to get as many stories published during a single shift.

Sometimes, by the time shift is done. I can’t stand to look at a laptop screen.

Remote work doesn’t always equate to less work. Sometimes, it means more work!

Don’t let tiktok fool you.

Not all remote jobs can be worked on while sipping mimosas at the beach.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure those kinds of jobs exist. And I’d love one of those eventually.

But for now, my remote work has me doing REAL WORK! I need to be focused.

I’ve been so busy and drained, I had to put Medium on Pause. But I’m hoping to find more balance this October.

Working for others can make you forget about your personal career goals and side hustles

When you’re working and getting a steady paycheck from a company, it’s easier to put off your side hustles and personal career goals.

It’s easy to get comfortable and forget about the things you need to do for yourself because by the time the day is over, you’re tired and you just want to rest or not have to look at a screen for hours.

I took a month to get acquainted with my job before coming back here to add Medium to my schedule.

I keep reminding myself — It’s all a learning journey.

Job Security is a Myth!

I thought having a steady job would relieve some of my anxieties.

Instead, I was surprised to discover it came with new anxieties.

When you work for someone else, you can’t help but think about the fact that the company can lay you off whenever they no longer need you.

It’s got me wandering —

Do you feel secure in your job?

Is there such a thing as a feeling of job security, when you’re working for someone else?

Do you feel like you can always count on your job to be there for you?

Please do share your thoughts with me.
